Event & Function Information For Hiring Freewheelin'

Freewheelin’ is primarily a five piece Jazz band consisting of drums, saxophone, keyboard, bass guitar and vocals. However we are extremely versatile and can adapt our configuration to suit your musical or venue requirements. We can perform as a duo, trio or quartet to suit the size of your function and our repertoire ranges from light, background Jazz to upbeat Latin and Rock & Roll.

Freewheelin’s band leader John Morris, has been involved in the New Zealand music scene since the early 70’s, and has a wealth of experience in playing for functions and events. He is happy to discuss your particular requirements and is both accommodating and discerning. He is an ideal person when it comes to reading a crowd and getting people up on the dance floor!

Freewheelin’ has released two CDs that contain a polished mixture of timeless classics and contemporary tunes. Listening to the tracks will give you some idea of the type of Jazz played and how we play it!

Below are some points that you may wish to consider when thinking of hiring Freewheelin’ for your function or event:

Setting Up

We have found through past experience that people often underestimate the time needed to set-up, as well as positioning and space required for the band. It is always beneficial to discuss with us the area that will be made available for our use; parking and access for moving equipment; where the electrical outlets are; any furniture needing shifting.

Outside events require a clean, dry, hard, level surface, raised stage or flat-bed truck for the band and sound equipment. A grassed surface is unsuitable because of the moisture content which effects instruments and equipment. If the function is to be held regardless of weather, we would require a warm, dry, sheltered stage area.

It is also advantageous to have the equipment set up before people start arriving, as it can be difficult to accomplish this successfully in a crowded room. We generally take an hour to set up which includes the setting up of instruments and sound system; a sound check to make sure that everything is working properly and ensuring that the sound quality and volume is not compromised by the setting.

Background Music vs. Dance Music

The first hour of the event is generally a time for introductions and mingling. If Freewheelin’ is required to play at the beginning of a function, or during a meal, we can ensure that the music is in the background and won't overwhelm conversation. As the event progresses and the guests want to party, we will pick up the pace.

Breaks, Drinks & Food For The Band

We generally take a 10 minute break each hour. This can of course, be adapted to suit timing during the course of the function. Establish with us whether or not food and drink be made available for the band.

Background Music During Breaks

We have CD's we can play during breaks, or use your selection if desired.

Costing

The cost of hiring the band will be determined by the number of musicians required, length of gig, travel time to the venue and other factors.
